Iliya Kusa, the UIF expert on international politics and the Middle East issue said in an interview for dyvys.info why it was decided to return Russia, and what consequences this would have for Ukraine.
It became known that the US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron agreed to invite Russia to the G7 summit in 2020. For the EU and the US, the issue of Ukraine is still relevant. There are no statements about the breaking of Normandy format and sanctions were not removed yet. However, the trend is obvious: the EU and the US believe that the normalization of relations with Russia is one of the ways to resolve the situation. I don’t think that all G7 members will support Russia’s return to the G8. As far as I know, there is no consensus yet. But Ukraine can do what it should have done after 2014 – fulfill its obligations to foreign partners regarding reforms, opening up the market for them, creation of comfortable conditions for investors. In other words, everything is centered around the domestic policy, especially economic one.
