This week the Verkhovna Rada should conduct the first review of the draft law on witness protection.
There is such a law in Ukraine, but it was adopted 25 years ago and it is outdated, the expert of the programme of reforming the law enforcement and judicial systems of the Ukrainian Institute for the Future Denys Monastyrskiy explains. “This is particularly evident after the murders of important witnesses,” he added.
If the draft law will be passed, Ukraine will introduce a witness protection system, which has been used in the United States since 1970. More than 20 thousand people have passed through it, and no one has suffered since then. The system offers the substitution of documents, names, workplaces. It is giving “new life” instead of the traditional method of physical protection done by security guards.
